Conference Overview

FREE STYLE: A Fashion Fusion of Producers, Consumers, and You! This conference is hosted by the undergraduate research program in the Transnational Production and Consumption of Dress and Fashion, directed by Women's Studies professor Leslie Rabine and Textiles & Clothing professor Susan Kaiser, and funded through a presidential chair grant from the office of the vice provost of undergraduate studies.

We would love for you to attend this conference, to participate in hands-on activities and to listen to a panel of speakers that are from both the academic world and fashion industry.

Conference Topics:

Fashioning Identities
Sub-cultural and countercultural fashions along with their influence on mainstream fashion trends.

Consumers & Producers
Sweat-free vs. sweat shop labor, garment workers' lives, the influence of globalization on today's clothing industry, environmental impacts of the apparel industry, and fair-trade.

Music & Style
How music and music industry influence and promote fashion as well as generate fashion trends.

Regional Style
California Style as case study; global fashion influence of diverse California styles (e.g. Hollywood, Surfing style, San Francisco, etc.), and defining regional trends and trendsetters.
